Frequently Asked Questions

Who is CORE for?

CORE is designed for current and recently graduated university students who are interested in pursuing a career in construction, architecture and design, and real estate.

What is the difference between a mentorship vs internship?

Internships are a form of employment in which a student can work in their desired field to gain experience and core competencies. Internships range from part-time to full-time, and they can either be paid or unpaid. The invested time can result in a foundation that can later be built upon towards a desired career, a foot-in-the-door, and a networking opportunity. Interns grow their understanding of behind-the-scenes operations, and — most importantly — build new relationships. A student’s immediate supervisors may be mentors as well, but not always.

Mentorships are relationships in which an older or more experienced individual provides support and wisdom to apprentices or students. Mentorships are relationships where an expert coaches and guides a newcomer to the field who wants to eventually have the same level of career success. The one-on-one training is conducive for someone looking to absorb as much information as possible from a willing mentor. Mentorships are usually unpaid, informal agreements.

What is the time commitment for CORE?

The time commitment for CORE ranges from two to four hours a week, for three months in the fall and spring semesters. Each month has two meetings for the cohort to attend with a specific topic to discuss and learn about.

Will I receive school credit from CORE?

CORE is currently working on the possibility of offering school credit for future cohorts.
